Libya New Cabinet to be Sworn in Thursday

Monday 5th November 2012

The new cabinet of Libya’s Prime Minister Dr Ali Zidan is to be sworn in on November 8. The decision was made by the National Congress during its Sunday session.

The date of swearing in was decided despite opposition by some members of the Congress who had reservations on a number of the ministers in the cabinet.

“The swearing-in ceremony will be on Thursday (November 8),” Mohamed Magharief, the President of the Congress, said during a televised meeting and repeated questioning of the legality of the move.

But Magharief insisted that the situation in Libya requires that the government be sworn in as soon as possible so the political vacuum in the country could come to an end.

Libya’s elected representatives gave their approval on October 31 to a 32-member cabinet presented by Prime Minister Dr Ali Zidan weeks after rejecting his predecessor’s line-up.

The chief task of the new government is to organise parliament elections under a new Constitution that is still to be drafted.
