Friday 30th November 2012

Libya’s Junior and Cadet Weightlifting national teams racked a total of 32 medals to secure second place at the 19th edition of the African Junior and Cadet Weightlifting Championship.

The competition took place in Tunis from 18-25 November and witnessed the participation of 12 countries, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Cameroon, Madagascar, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Nigeria and Senegal.

Egypt were crowned victors of the competition, taking a total of 51 medals, 42 gold and nine silver. Libya took second with nine golds, 13 silvers and ten bronze, whilst Morocco came in third position to complete the podium of winners.

Libya previously had a proud heritage in weightlifting, but the sport was severely suppressed by the former regime. Qaddafi was notoriously hostile to sportsmen, whom he viewed as potential rivals to himself for public esteem and affection.
