February 2013

If all goes well and the venture proves successful, Liverpool Community College is hoping that within five years it would establish a fully-fledged new English language school in Libya.

Officials at Liverpool Community College have reportedly already spent five days in the Libyan capital, Tripoli visiting eight oil companies and representatives of the Ministry of Petroleum, which are all keen to improve the skills of the local workforce.

As soon as the summer, Liverpool Community College is now in talks to help set up a Tripoli-based English language school for adults that would mean “graduates” would have a level of English to satisfy Border Agency assessments so they could get study visas and take more qualifications in the UK.

The centre is likely be funded in the main from ministry officials in Libya. If the partnership is successful, Liverpool Community College would help establish a college in Tripoli offering HND and other qualifications essential for career progression, it has been reported.

Denia Kincade, Liverpool Community College head of international development, told The Liverpool Echo that she hopes the links could see them establish a further education institution in Tripoli offering a raft of industry-tailored courses ranging from construction to beauty therapy.

She said: “It is a business opportunity, but if the Libyans have better English it could also lead to more of them studying in the UK. Because of the new Libya when we went to Tripoli they were very welcoming and are pleased to see Europeans as they want to be part of the world again.”

Meanwhile, later this month representatives from Libya’s Ministry of Petroleum and the National Oil Corporation, NOC, would be visiting Liverpool and benefit from the expertise of the college , and discuss the possibility of setting up the language school.
