Godfather Part 2

The award-winning 1974 American crime epic, The Godfather Part II , will be shown at Tripoli’s Art House tonight.

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and part-based on Mario Puzo’s novel of the same name, the film is both a sequel and a prequel to Coppola’s 1972 filmThe Godfather.

Starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, the film explores a dark side of the American dream. It draws a parrellel between the rise to power of young Sicilian immigrant Vito Corleone (De Niro) in turn-of-the-century New York and the spiritual fall of his son Michael (Pacino) as he attempts to expand the family business into pre-Castro Cuba in the 1950s.

The Godfather Part II was De Niro’s first big film, and it is widely considered to be Pacino’s best ever performance. The film won six Oscars including best picture, best director, and best supporting actor.

Tonight’s film-screening is organised by the Arete Cinema Club. Cinemas and theatres in Libya were closed for decades and the cinema club aims to reintroduce films to the community.

The Godfather Part II is in English with Arabic subtitles. The screening starts at 6 pm on Thursday 30 May, with refreshments available beforehand. The Art House is on Al-Sekka Road in Tripoli.
