Ms Deborah Jones, the new US Ambassador to Libya seen presenting her credentials to the GNC

At a reception at the US Embassy on Tuesday, officially celebrating her arrival with members of the Libyan government, the newly appointed US Ambassador to Libya Ms Deborah Jones commended Libya’s cultural and humanitarian heritage, noting the important role it plays in maintaining peace and security.

A week ago Ms Jones, presented her credentials to the General National Congress, GNC, Libya’s highest political and legislative authority. Since then she has already taken part in a number of meetings since.

In the presence of other ambassadors to Libya and diplomats she expressed her pleasure of taking part in the Libya mission.

Ms Jones succeeds former ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, who was killed along with three other Americans when the US Benghazi mission was overrun on September 11 last year.

Christopher Stevens who was killed in a terrorist act on September 11 last year in Benghazi. Three other embassy staff were also killed.

The new ambassador, a fluent speaker of Arabic, hopes to be able to further develop cooperation and relations between the US and Libya.
