Derna protestors call for strike

By Libya Herald staff.
Benghazi, 24 November 2013:

The deputy leader of Derna Local Council, Omar Bukhatu, has resigned today citing personal reasons for his departure, according to the Libyan news agency LANA.

The announcement is seen as making little difference as the council has, like the army and police, has been unable to operate in recent months.

However, it coincides with calls from local civil society activists for a general strike in the town on Tuesday in protest at the lack of security there.

Last night, a security officer Fares Al-Zaroog, was murdered near his home in Derna’s district of Al-Jibela. Earlier in the day, an Iraqi academic teaching in Derna, Hamid Khalf, was kidnapped, it is thought by the same group as involved in Zaroog’s murder.

There were also protests yesterday after the funeral of Fawzi Al-Zuwki, the secretary of Derna Shura Council, gunned down by unknown assailants.

In the past seven days, a judge and two traffic policemen were also murdered, making it the bloodiest week in the town since the revolution.
