Head of EU delegation to Libya/ Statement

In relation to some incorrect information published on about an EU funded Libyan News Agency, Head of the European Union Delegation to Libya Ambassador Nataliya Apostolova made the following statement:

Vivid democracy is dependent on a vivid unbiased impartial media scene. EU has worked with persistence on the development of media in Libya since more than 4 years. Focusing on the freedom of information of the Libyan people our implementing partner DW Akademie and the EU delegation have assisted the development of a pure Libyan media institution – The Libyan Cloud News Agency. The EU does not finance that agency.

The EU only financed the training of Libyan journalists working there. DW-Akademie is working in Libya on the basis of a memorandum of understanding officially and publicly signed by Jomaa Ateega on behalf of the GNC in 2013.

On November 19th 2015 the Libyan Cloud News Agency was officially launched and that was the date when the EU project with DW ended so that there is no misinterpretation of the funding of the Libyan cloud agency. It is purely Libyan and will be financed by its subscribers.

All information about the financial policy, management and organisation of that project, as well as the editorial guidelines are transparently published on the website of the delegation.
