Foreign Office Minister urges support for UN process in Libya

Foreign & Commonwealth Office

Minister for the Middle East Tobias Ellwood called for unity today at a meeting in Rome to demonstrate unified international support for the UN-led effort to establish a Government of National Accord (GNA) in Libya. He urged parties to the process to come together in support of an inclusive deal.

The meeting, co-hosted by Italy and the US and attended by a host of international and regional partners, highlighted the high degree of international consensus on the way forward to support peace and security in Libya, especially from Libya’s neighbours and closest partners. Members of the Libyan political dialogue now intend on signing the final agreement in Skhirat on Wednesday 16 December.

Speaking after the meeting, Tobias Ellwood said:

I welcome the support from a broad range of Libyans from across the political spectrum in recognising the urgency of creating a long awaited unity government; I urge all political actors to sign on 16 December. There can be no alternative to the UN Process and the Libyan Political Agreement announced in October, and I urge all parties to the talks to unite in the interests of the people of Libya, who want to live in peace and stability.

Only a united Government can begin the difficult task of establishing effective, legitimate governance, restoring stability and tackling the threats posed by Daesh and illegal migration. The UK and our international partners stand ready to assist the Government of National Accord in restoring peace and stability to Libya.
